     Commander Sir Archibald Richard James Southby, 1st Bt. was born on 8 July 1886.¹ He was the son of Richard Southby and Hon. Isabella Hewitt.² He married, firstly, Phyllis Mary Garton, daughter of Charles Henry Garton and Juliet Westlake, on 20 July 1909.¹ He and Phyllis Mary Garton were divorced in 1962.¹ He married, secondly, Noreen Vera Simm, daughter of Bernard Compton Simm, on 28 March 1962.¹ He died on 30 October 1969 at age 83.¹
     He was educated at Brandon House School, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.¹ He was educated at H.M.S. Oxford [U.K.] on 12 June 1937.¹ He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Oxfordshire between 1938 and 1946.¹ He held the office of Younger Brother, Trinity House in 1944.¹ He was awarded the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.¹

     Phyllis Mary Garton was born in 1886 at Epson, Surrey, England.¹ She was the daughter of Charles Henry Garton and Juliet Westlake.¹ She married Commander Sir Archibald Richard James Southby, 1st Bt., son of Richard Southby and Hon. Isabella Hewitt, on 20 July 1909.² She and Commander Sir Archibald Richard James Southby, 1st Bt. were divorced in 1962.² She died on 25 April 1974.²
