John Gorell Barnes, 1st Baron Gorell was born on 16 May 1848.1 He was the son of Henry Barnes and Georgiana Smith.2 He married Mary Humpston Mitchell, daughter of Thomas Mitchell, on 20 April 1881.1 He died on 22 April 1913 at age 64.1
He graduated from Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1876 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1888.1 He held the office of Judge of the High Court in 1892, Probate Divorce and Admiralty Division.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1892.1 He held the office of Bencher of Inner Temple in 1895.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1898.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1905.1 He was president the High Court, Probate Divorce and Admiralty Division between 1905 and 1909.1 He was created 1st Baron Gorell, of Brampton, co.
