Sir James Dundas, Lord Arniston was born in 1620.2,3 He was the son of Sir James Dundas of Arniston.1 He married, secondly, Janet Hepburne, daughter of Sir Adam Hepburn of Humbie and Agnes Foulis.1 He married by contract, firstly, Marion Boyd, daughter of Robert Boyd, 7th Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock and Lady Christian Hamilton, on 12 November 1641.4,2 He married, thirdly, Helen Skene, daughter of Sir James Skene, in 1666.3 He died in 1679 at Arniston, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1
He was educated at St. Andrew's University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Midlothian.4 He was styled as Lord Arniston [Scottish Law Lord] in 1662.4 He held the office of Senator of the College of Justice in 1662.4 In 1663 he resigned rather than subscribe to the renunciation of the Covenant.4
