Sir Richard Morris Dane was born on 21 May 1854.1 He was the son of Richard Martin Dane and Sophia Eliza Griffiths.2 He married Emily Leeds, daughter of Sir Edward Leeds, 3rd Bt. and Fanny Templer, on 24 June 1880.1 He and Emily Leeds were divorced in 1901.1 He died on 13 February 1940 at age 85.1
He was in the Indian Civil Service between 1874 and 1909.1 He was Inspector-General of Excise and Salt for India between 1907 and 1909.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (K.C.I.E.) in 1909.1 He was Foreign Chief Inspector of Salt for Gabelle, China between 1913 and 1919.1 He was awarded the Order of the Excellent Crop of China in 1915 1st class.1 He was awarded the Order of the Striped Tiger of China in 1918 1st class.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor.1
