Major Sir Robert Spencer-Nairn of Monimail, 1st Bt. was born on 11 July 1880.2 He is the son of Sir Michael Barker Nairn of Rankeilour, 1st Bt. and Emily Frances Spencer.2 He married Clara Kathleen Smith, daughter of C. Chaloner Smith, on 13 February 1906.2
He was also known as Robert Nairn.2 He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England.2 He was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.2 He gained the rank of Major in the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry.2 He fought in the First World War.2 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Fife.2 He was director of Michael Nairn & Company and Michael Nairn and Greenwich.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Fife.2 He was appointed Knight in 1928.2 In 1928 his name was legally changed to Robert Spencer-Nairn of Monimail.2 He was created 1st Baronet Spencer-Nairn, of Monimail, co.
