Charles McGarel Johnston was born on 3 May 1876.1 He was the son of George Birch Johnston and Jane Waring Evans.2 He married Margaret Thompson, daughter of Arthur Raine Thompson, on 2 November 1908.1 He died on 4 October 1918 at age 42, lost at sea after his ship was torpedoed off the Irish coast en route to South Africa.1
He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Matabele War in 1896.1 He gained the rank of Trooper in 1896 in the BSA Company.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 5th Rhodesian Volunteers.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902.1

George Robert Arthur McGarel Johnston was born on 2 September 1916.1 He was the son of Charles McGarel Johnston and Margaret Thompson.2 He married Erika Thyra Ekman, daughter of Allen Birger Ekman, on 13 November 1954.1 He died in 1992.3
He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Second World War, with the Royal Air Force, and was mentioned in despatches.1 He graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1939 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was with the Colonial Administration Service, Tanganyika in 1939.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) in 1941 and bar (1944.)1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1944.1 He was District Officer and District Commissioner of Tanganyika before 1951.1 He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1951.1 He lived in 1976 at Lusaka, ZambiaG.1
