Lt.-Gen. William Goffe was the son of Reverend Stephen Goffe and Deborah West.2 He married Frances Whalley, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Edward Whalley and Judith Duffell.1 He died in 1679 at Hadley, Massachusetts, U.S.A.G.1 He was also reported to have died in 1680 at New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A.G.1
He was a salter's apprentice when young at London, EnglandG.1 In 1642 he was imprisoned for agitation in support of Parliament against King Charles I.1 He was commissioned on 18 February 1644/45 with the rank of Captain, in the service of the Colonel Harley's Regiment, New Model Army.1 He was a judge trial at the trial of King Charles I in 1648.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Cromwell's Army.2 He fought in the Battle of Dunbar on 3 September 1650.1 He fought in the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General.1 On 12 December 1653 expelled remnant of ‘Barebones' Parl.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Yarmouth from 1654 to 1655.1 He was one of the Major-Generals charged with regional supervision, having responsibility for Berkshire, Hampshire and Sussex on 9 August 1655.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hampshire between 1656 and 1658.2 On 20 January 1657/58 he was called to Cromwell's ‘Other House' as ‘William Lord Goffe.1' In November 1658 he was granted by Protector Richard Cromwell Irish lands worth £500 p.a.1 On 27 July 1660 he fled to Boston, Massachusetts.2 On 29 August 1660 he was excepted from the Act of Indemnity as a regicide.1 He also had three elder sons.1
