Lt.-Col. Richard Shearman Godley was born on 24 September 1876.1 He was the son of Lt.-Col. William Alexander Godley and Laura Bird.2 He married, firstly, Dorothea Matterson, daughter of Lt.-Col. Arthur W. Matterson and Muriel Tyrrell, on 26 April 1906.1 He and Dorothea Matterson were divorced in 1937 at South AfricaG.1 He married, secondly, Constance Marion Archer, daughter of Addis Edward Archer and Eveline Smith, on 27 October 1937.1 He died on 3 December 1950 at age 74.1
He fought in the Matabeleland and Mashonaland Rebellions between 1896 and 1897.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901, where he was wounded.1 He was awarded the King's Police Medal (K.P.M.)1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1919.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and Deputy Commissioner of South African Police.1 He wrote the book Khaki and Blue, published 1935.1 He lived in 1952 at Wild Oak Cottage, Wild Oak Lane, Taunton, Somerset, England.3
