John Scott Maclay, 1st Viscount Muirshiel was born on 26 October 1905.1 He was the son of Joseph Paton Maclay, 1st Baron Maclay and Martha Strang.1,2 He married Betty L'Estrange Astley, daughter of Delaval Graham L'Estrange Astley and Kate Clark, on 16 October 1930.1 He died on 17 August 1992 at age 86, without issue.3
He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.3 He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (National Liberal) for Montrose between 1940 and 1950.3 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1944.3 He was head of the British Shipping Mission to Washington in 1944.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (National Liberal) for Renfrew West between 1950 and 1964.3 He held the office of Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation between 1951 and 1952.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1952.3 He held the office of Minister of State, Colonial Office between 1956 and 1957.3 He held the office of Secretary of State, Scotland between 1957 and 1962.3 He was awarded the Companion of Honour (C.H.) in 1962.3 He was created 1st Viscount Muirshiel, of Kilmacolm, co. Renfrew [U.K.] on 16 July 1964. He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1973.3 On his death, his viscountancy became extinct.3
