Colonel Frederick Hugh Gordon Cunliffe was born on 6 September 1861.1 He was the son of Maj.-Gen. George Gordon Cunliffe and Pauline Lumsdaine.2 He married Ella Sophie Gaussen, daughter of David Gaussen, in 1895.1 He died on 13 June 1955 at age 93.1
He fought in the Hazara Expedition in 1891.1 He fought in the Chitral Campaign in 1895.1 He gained the rank of Boer War in 1902 in the where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches four times.1 He gained the rank of Colonel and Honorary Brigadier-General in the Seaforth Highlanders.1 He was Commandant of the Nigeria Regiment between 1914 and 1917.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1916.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1916.1 He was Brigade Commander of the HQ Unit between 1917 and 1919.1 He was awarded the Commandeur, Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.1 He was awarded the Officer, Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus of Italy.1
