General Henry Hopkinson was born on 7 August 1820.1 He was the son of Benjamin Hopkinson and Louisa Ann Stedman.2 He married Jean Montgomerie, daughter of Dr. William Montgomerie, on 10 September 1849.1 He died on 22 December 1899 at age 79.1
He was educated at College de Menars, FranceG.1 He was commissioned in 1838, in the service of the 15th Regiment Bengal Native Infantry.1 He fought in the Punjab Campaign between 1848 and 1849.1 He fought in the Burma Campaign in 1852.1 He held the office of Commissioner of Arakan in 1852.1 He held the office of Commissioner of Tenasserim Provinces in 1858.1 He was Agent for the Governor-General of India on the North-East Frontier in 1860.1 He held the office of Commissioner to Assam in 1860.1 He fought in the Bhutan Expedition in 1865.1 He retired from the military, with the rank of General.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.) in 1874.1
