     William Smoult Playfair was born on 27 July 1836.¹ He was the son of George Playfair and Janet Ross.¹ He married Emily Kitson, daughter of James Kitson and Anne Newton, on 26 April 1864.¹ He died on 13 August 1903 at age 67.¹
     He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G, in 1856 with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)¹ He was Professor of Medicine between 1858 and 1860 at Calcutta Medical College, Calcutta, India^G.¹ He was registered as a Member, Royal College of Physicians, London (M.R.C.P.) in 1863.¹ He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London (F.R.C.P.) in 1870.¹ He was obstretic physician between 1872 and 1898 at King's College Hospital, London, England^G.¹ He was Professor of Obstretic Medicine between 1872 and 1898 at King's College London, London, England^G.¹ He wrote the book Science and Practice of Midwifery, published 1876.¹ He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland^G, in 1885.¹ He wrote the book System of Gynaecology, published 1896, with Sir T. C. Allbutt.¹ He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G, in 1898.¹

     Emily Kitson was the daughter of James Kitson and Anne Newton.^1,2 She married William Smoult Playfair, son of George Playfair and Janet Ross, on 26 April 1864.¹ She died on 21 November 1916.¹
     From 26 April 1864, her married name became Playfair.¹

     Sir Nigel Ross Playfair was born in 1874.¹ He was the son of William Smoult Playfair and Emily Kitson.¹ He died in 1934.¹
     He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, England^G.¹ He was educated at University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G.¹ He was a professional actor on the stage between 1902 and 1918.¹ In 1920 he revived the Beggar's Opera.¹ He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1928.¹
