     Major Walter Whitfield held the office of Paymaster of Marines.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Romney.¹

     Hon. Mary Bellenden was born in 1685. She was the daughter of John Bellenden, 2nd Lord Bellenden of Broughton and Lady Mary Moore.^1,3 She married General John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll, son of Hon. John Campbell and Elizabeth Elphinstone, in 1720.³ She died on 18 December 1736.³ She was buried on 23 December 1736 at St. Anne's, Soho, London, England^G.³
     She held the office of Maid of Honour to the Princess of Wales before 1720.³ Her married name became Campbell. She held the office of Keeper of the Palace of Somerset House, in the Strand.³
     The poet Gay calls her "smiling Mary, soft and fair as dawn." Horace Walpole writes "her face and person were charming; lively she was, almost to étourderie, and so agreeable that I never heard her mentioned afterwards by one of her contemporaries, who did not prefer as the most perfect creature they ever knew."³

     John Bellenden, 2nd Lord Bellenden of Broughton was the son of William Ker, 2nd Earl of Roxburghe and Jean Ker.² He married Lady Mary Moore, daughter of Henry Moore, 1st Earl of Drogheda and Hon. Alice Spencer, on 10 April 1683.² He died before 5 November 1706 at Paterson's Land, near Canongate Foot, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.³
     He was given the name of John Ker at birth.² He held the office of Heritable Usher and Doorkeeper of the Exchequer [Scotland] on 23 December 1671.² He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Bellenden of Broughton, in Midlothian [S., 1661] on 23 December 1671.² In July 1689 he shot dead a soldier who had declared for William and Mary, and was then imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle for some time.² In August 1690 he was reported to have helped rob the mail, but was actually already held in Edinburgh Castle at the time.²

     George John Campbell, Earl of Campbell was born on 17 February 1763 at London, England^G.¹ He was the son of Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon.¹ He died on 9 July 1764 at age 1 at Roseneath, Dunbartonshire, Scotland^G.^1,2
     He was styled as Marquess of Lorn in 1764.¹ He was styled as Earl of Campbell in 1764.¹

     Louisa Grant was the daughter of Joseph Grant.¹ She married William Gibson, son of William Gibson, on 27 October 1831.² She died on 4 December 1853.¹
     From 27 October 1831, her married name became Gibson.¹

     John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll was born on 21 December 1777.¹ He was the son of Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon.¹ He was baptised on 18 January 1778 at St. James's, Westminster, London, England^G.¹ He married, firstly, Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of William Campbell and Sarah Cunningham, on 3 August 1802.¹ He married, secondly, Joan Glassel, daughter of John Glassel and Helen Buchan, on 17 April 1820.¹ He married, thirdly, Anne Colquhoun Cuninghame, daughter of John Cuninghame, 13th of Craigends and Margaret Cuningham-Fairlie, on 8 January 1831.¹ He died on 25 April 1847 at age 69 at Inverary Castle, Argyllshire, Scotland^G.¹
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Argyllshire between 1799 and 1822.¹ He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 20 May 1819.¹ He succeeded as the 4th Baron Hamilton of Hameldon, co. Leicester [G.B., 1776] on 22 October 1839.¹ He succeeded as the 9th Baronet Campbell, of Lundy in Angus, co.      Lady Augusta Campbell was born on 31 March 1760.² She was the daughter of Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon.¹ She married Brig-Gen. Henry Mordaunt Clavering, son of Lt.-Gen. Sir John Clavering, on 5 February 1788 at Parish Church, Bicester, Oxfordshire, England^G.^1,2 She died on 22 June 1831 at age 71.¹
     From 5 February 1788, her married name became Clavering.¹

     Elizabeth Campbell was the daughter of William Campbell and Sarah Cunningham.¹ She married John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll, son of Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon, on 3 August 1802.¹ She died on 9 December 1818, without issue.¹

     William Campbell married, firstly, Sarah Cunningham.¹ He married, secondly, Catharine Gunning, daughter of William Gunning and Marion Christie.
     He lived at Fairfield, Ayrshire, Scotland^G.¹

     Joan Glassel was born circa 1775 at Fredericksburg, Virginia, U.S.A.² She was the daughter of John Glassel and Helen Buchan.¹ She was baptised on 1 July 1796 at Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland. She married John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll, son of Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll and Elizabeth Gunning, Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon, on 17 April 1820.¹ She died on 22 January 1828.¹
     Her married name became Campbell.
