He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Chippenahm between 1832 and 1835.1 He was an early pioneer of photography, developing and patenting the colotype (or talbotype) process. He held the office of High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1840.1 He wrote the book English Etymologies.1
