Edward Quintal1

M, #156893, b. 1800, d. 8 September 1841
Last Edited=16 Apr 2006
Edward Quintal was born in 1800 at Pitcairn IslandG.1 He was the son of Matthew Quintal and Teraura (?)2 He married Dinah Adams, daughter of John Adams and Vahineatua (?), on 4 March 1819 at Pitcairn IslandG.3 He died on 8 September 1841 at Pitcairn IslandG.2
In 1833 Edward was appointed a Pitcairn elder by Joshua Hill. When Hill first came to Pitcairn, Edward attracted his particular notice. Indeed, Edward stood by Hill to the last, although this bias did not pass to his children. His temper was well-known. In one dispute with John Evans, who was a very small man, he brought the matter to termination by lifting Evans over his head and throwing him into a pig-sty, causing him serious injury. Edward was an honest man, but severe and straight-laced. In general, he opposed the entry of the three Englishmen (Buffett, Evans, and Nobbs) to Pitcairn, and especially resented their leadership role, feeling that the leadership should be among the native Pitcairners.2 He held the office of Chief Magistrate of Pitcairn Island between 1838 and 1839.2
