Reverend William Bell Christian was born on 17 August 1815 at Ewanrigg Hall, Dearham, Cumberland, EnglandG.2 He was the son of Deemster John Christian and Susanna Allen.2 He married, firstly, Charlotte Elizabeth Brine, daughter of Thomas Brine, on 21 July 1840.1 He married, secondly, Emma Mary Houssemayne Du Boulay, daughter of Reverend James Thomas Houssemayne Du Boulay and Susannah Maria Ward, on 4 January 1864 at Torquay, Devon, EnglandG.2 He married, thirdly, Maria Bowes Johnson, daughter of Lt.-Col. Charles Christopher Johnson, on 18 June 1867 at St. Peter's, Eaton Square, London, EnglandG.2 He married, fourthly, Sophie Marie Anna Katharina Schlact, daughter of Karl Levin Schlact, on 1 September 1874 at Schwerin, Mecklenburg, GermanyG.2 He died on 31 July 1886 at age 70 at Milntown, Lezayre, Isle of ManG.2 He was buried on 2 August 1886 at Kirk Lezayre, Isle of ManG.2
He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1840 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was Government Chaplain in 1840 at St. John'sG.2 He was the Vicar between 1845 and 1861 at Lezayre, Isle of ManG.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the Isle of Man.1 He held the office of Magistrate in 1858.2 He held the office of Member of the House of Keys (M.H.K.) on 21 March 1867, for Ramsey.2 He was Captain of the Parish of Maughold on 12 March 1872.2
He was the last self-elected Key, and one of only two clergymen who ever sat in the House. He soon became an active and leading Member, and when in 1866 the House of Keys became popularly elected he was returned for Ramsey, as he was, unopposed, in each election for the next 18 years. In April 1883 he was appointed Receiver General, with a seat in the Council of the Legislature. He was an ardent lover of his country, and did much good work for it.2
