     Sir Thomas Stanley, 4th Bt. was born on 27 September 1670.1 He was the son of Sir Edward Stanley, 3rd Bt. and Elizabeth Bosvile.1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Patten, daughter of Thomas Patten, on 16 August 1688.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Holcroft, daughter of Thomas Holcroft, after 1694.1 He died on 7 May 1714 at age 43.1
     He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Stanley, of Bickerstaffe, co. Lancs [E., 1627] on 16 October 1671.1

Elizabeth Patten1

     Elizabeth Patten was the daughter of Thomas Patten.1 She married Sir Thomas Stanley, 4th Bt., son of Sir Edward Stanley, 3rd Bt. and Elizabeth Bosvile, on 16 August 1688.1 She died in 1694.1
     Her married name became Stanley.

     He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, East Kent Regiment.1

     Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby was born on 17 September 1689.3 He was the son of Sir Thomas Stanley, 4th Bt. and Elizabeth Patten.1 He married Elizabeth Hesketh, daughter of Robert Hesketh and Elizabeth Spencer, on 14 September 1714.3 He died on 22 February 1776 at age 86.3
     He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Lancashire between 1712 and 1776.3 He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Stanley, of Bickerstaffe, co. Lancs [E., 1627] on 7 May 1714.3 He held the office of High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1723.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Lancashire between 1727 and 1736.3 He succeeded as the 11th Earl of Derby [E., 1485] on 1 February 1735/36.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1742 and 1757.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1771 and 1776.3

     Elizabeth Hesketh was the daughter of Robert Hesketh and Elizabeth Spencer.1,3 She married Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby, son of Sir Thomas Stanley, 4th Bt. and Elizabeth Patten, on 14 September 1714.1 She died on 24 February 1776.1
     From 14 September 1714, her married name became Stanley. After her marriage, Elizabeth Hesketh was styled as Countess of Derby on 1 February 1736.

     Rt. Hon. James Smith-Stanley was born on 7 January 1716/17. He was the son of Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby and Elizabeth Hesketh.1 He married Lucy Smith, daughter of Hugh Smith and Dorothy Barrett, on 17 March 1746/47.1 He died on 1 June 1771 at age 54.1
     He was styled as Lord Strange, incorrectly.1 He was given the name of James Stanley at birth.1 He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1 He emigrated to Leyden University, Leyden, The NetherlandsG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Lancashire between 1741 and 1771.1 In 1747 his name was legally changed to James Smith-Stanley by Act of Parliament.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1757 and 1771.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1762.1

     Lucy Smith was the daughter of Hugh Smith and Dorothy Barrett.1 She married Rt. Hon. James Smith-Stanley, son of Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby and Elizabeth Hesketh, on 17 March 1746/47.1 She died on 5 February 1759.1
     From 17 March 1746/47, her married name became Smith-Stanley.1
