Grizel Bethune was born circa 1520.1 She was the daughter of Sir John Bethune, 2nd of Creich and Janet Hay.2,1 She married, firstly, Sir William Scott of Kirkurd and Buccleuch, younger, son of Sir Walter Scott, 3rd of Buccleuch and Elizabeth Carmichael, circa 1548.2,1 She married, secondly, Sir Andrew Murray of Blackbarony, son of John Murray and Isobel Hoppar, on 8 February 1552.2,1 She died on 18 August 1579 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1

Sir Andrew Murray of Blackbarony was the son of John Murray and Isobel Hoppar.2 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Lockhart, daughter of William Lockhart.2 He married, secondly, Grizel Bethune, daughter of Sir John Bethune, 2nd of Creich and Janet Hay, on 8 February 1552.1,3 He died on 1 September 1572.2

James Borthwick, 7th Lord Borthwick was born on 24 June 1570.1 He was the son of William Borthwick, 6th Lord Borthwick and Grissel Scott.1 A contract for the marriage of James Borthwick, 7th Lord Borthwick and Margaret Hay was signed on 26 October 1582.1 He died in December 1599 at age 29.1

John Borthwick, 9th Lord Borthwick was born on 9 February 1615/16 at Prestongrange, ScotlandG.1 He was the son of John Borthwick, 8th Lord Borthwick and Lady Lilias Kerr.1 He married Lady Elizabeth Kerr, daughter of William Kerr, 1st Earl of Lothian and Lady Anne Kerr, on 23 August 1649.1 He died between 13 March 1674 and 26 November 1675, without issue.2,3
He succeeded as the 9th Lord of Borthwick [S., 1452] in November 1623.1 On 18 November 1650 he surrendered Borthwick Castle to Oliver Cromwell, on honourable terms.1
On his death, the Lordship of Borthwck became dormant for 90 years, until 1762.4
