He married, firstly, Marie Prinzessin von Hessen und bei Rhein, daughter of Ludwig II Großherzog von Hessen und bei Rhein and Wilhelmine Prinzessin von Baden, on 28 April 1841 at St. Petersburg, RussiaG.4 He married, secondly, Ekaterina Mikhailovna Dolgorukova, Princess Yourievskaya, daughter of Prince Mikhail Mikhailovich Dolgorukov and Vera Gavrilovna Vischnevskya, on 6 July 1880 at St. Petersburg, RussiaG, in a morganatic marriage. He died on 13 March 1881 at age 62 at St. Petersburg, RussiaG, assassinated when a bomb was thrown under his carriage.4 He was buried on 31 March 1881 at St. Petersburg, RussiaG.
     He gained the title of Grand Duke Aleksandr Nikolaievich of Russia.4 He and Countess Olga Kalinovskya were associated circa 1847. He and Wilhelmine Bayer were associated circa 1855. He succeeded as the Tsar Aleksandr II of Russia on 2 March 1855. He and Princess N. Lubomirska were associated circa 1866.
