     Sir Henry Evan Murchison James was born on 20 January 1846.1 He was the son of William Edward James and Elizabeth Hill.1 He died on 20 August 1923 at age 77, unmarried.1
     He was educated at Durham School, Durham, County Durham, EnglandG.1 He was Assistant Collector, Indian Civil Service in 1865.1 He held the office of Postmaster-General of Bombay in 1875.1 He held the office of Postmaster-General of Bengal in 1880.1 He held the office of Collector and Commissioner of Ahmedabad between 1889 and 1891.1 He held the office of Commissioner of Sind between 1891 and 1900.1 He held the office of Member of the Legislative Council (M.L.C.) [Sind] between 1895 and 1899.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.) in 1898.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (K.C.I.E.) in 1901.1
