Likely that his first name was Gabriel - named after his father - and called Benoist, his middle name. His sister Miss Ellen attached a handwritten tag to the back of a portrait of a young man identifying the subject as Gabirel Benoist Shields. Benoist died at age 11. It is highly unlikely the portrait is of Gabriel Benoist Shields, Sr. because his father died when he was very young and his mother would not have spent that much money to have her son's portrait done. None of his siblings had childhood portraits done. Conclusion - the portrait is this Gabriel Benoist Shields, not his father as a child.2
